"Last year I saw here in Turkey what innovation can achieve. At the Mamak waste processing site in Ankara, Mr. Ali Kantur adapted technologies creatively to turn garbage and bad smells into electricity and even tomatoes—plus profits and jobs! Solution for Waste in Turkey
World Bank sees future in a dump
The notoriously foul Mamak landfill is now the source of heat and energy for greenhouses outside Ankara thanks to aid from the World Bank and a garbage-recycling station. If Turkey can focus on alternative energy sources, it could create more jobs, says a World Bank deputy chief.
The energy produced by the transformation of biogas into alternative energy and the excess heat which is emaneted during this process is used for the greenhouses and thus no fossil fuel is needed for the operation of the greenhouses within the ITC Integrated Solid Waste Management System. Greenhouses have been operated in Mamak Landfill where cluster tomatoes are grown. Now that Ankara got rid of all the disadvantages of Mamak Landfill, the residents of the city can now provide fresh, delicious and high quality vegetables and flowers. 100% material recovery has been achieved with this system, which is a brand new application in the literature of environmental technologies. Furthermore, research and development studies are ongoing for the transfer of these methods to fuel farming.
