World Bank sees future in a dump
The notoriously foul Mamak landfill is now the source of heat and energy for greenhouses outside Ankara thanks to aid from the World Bank and a garbage-recycling station. If Turkey can focus on alternative energy sources, it could create more jobs, says a World Bank deputy chief.
ITC has started the implementation of the systematic separate collection, transportation and recycling of packaging wastes in Yenimahalle and Mamak districts of Ankara within the context of “Packaging Waste Control Regulation” and in cooperation with ÇEVKO. Door-to-door public disclosure about separate collection and sorting of packaging wastes is ongoing and the packaging wastes are collected on pre-announced dates via “Packaging Waste Collection Vehicles” which transport the wastes to Mamak Packaging Waste Sorting Plant. The packaging waste collection is carried on in accordance with the dissemination plan and 106,000 households have been reached as from January 2009.
